Image Quality Engineer - Paris - France
Camera Calibration & Image Quality
SkinBit | Full-time On-Site | Paris
About SkinBit
SkinBit is building the next generation of full-body dermatological scanners, combining high-resolution multi-camera imaging, controlled illumination, 3D reconstruction, and advanced algorithmic analysis to enable early skin cancer detection at scale.
We are building a clinical-grade system where optical performance, photometric stability, and image quality directly impact medical outcomes. The scanner is real, the hardware is evolving, and image quality is a core pillar of the product.
We are strengthening our France-based hardware team with a senior optical engineer who will own image quality end-to-end, from raw photon capture to algorithm-ready data.
The Role
You will be responsible for the optical, photometric, and imaging foundations of SkinBit’s scanner platform.
Your mission is to ensure that every image produced by the system is calibrated, stable, measurable, reproducible, and fit for downstream computer vision and clinical use. This role sits at the intersection of optics, lighting, sensors, software pipelines, and real-world constraints.
You will work closely with the CTO and collaborate daily with computer vision, hardware, mechanical, electronics, product, and clinical stakeholders.
This is a hands-on, senior execution role, not a theoretical optics position.
What You’ll Do
Own Camera Optics & Calibration
Define and implement camera calibration procedures:
Intrinsic and extrinsic calibration
Optical distortion modeling
Focus and depth-of-field characterization
Multi-camera alignment and consistency
Design and maintain automated calibration tooling (targets, rigs, software pipelines)
Monitor and improve long-term calibration stability, accounting for thermal, mechanical, and optical drift
Design and Optimize Lighting & Photometry
Design and optimize illumination systems:
Light source geometry and placement
Uniformity and repeatability
Specular reflection management
Polarization strategies (crossed, linear, circular)
Define and enforce photometric protocols:
Intensity control
Color temperature
Reproducibility and stability over time
Work closely with mechanical and electronics teams to ensure robust integration
Own Image Quality & Photo Pipeline
Define objective image quality metrics:
MTF, SNR, contrast, noise
Color accuracy and consistency
Inter-camera homogeneity
Audit and improve the full image pipeline:
RAW → ISP → algorithm-ready images
White balance and color correction
Focus stacking and motion compensation
Build automated image regression tests to detect quality degradation over time
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with:
Computer Vision / ML teams (input data quality)
Hardware & mechanical teams (tolerances, vibration, thermal behavior)
Product & clinical teams (real-world constraints, reproducibility)
Document technical decisions and contribute to the industrial robustness of the system
